Senior Advisor – Crisis Management
Mr. Thomas A. (Tom) Clayton, recognized as one of the foremost experts in hostage and kidnap for ransom negotiations, is a senior advisor at FocusPoint International. Tom specializes in crisis response with an emphasis on kidnap for ransom and extortion (KR&E) resolution. In his capacity as a senior advisor, Tom works closely with the executive team regarding the methodology utilized by FocusPoint in the response to and management of KR&E and political risk engagements.
Over the course of 25 years, Tom has successfully resolved well over 500 kidnaps for ransom. In 2001, at the behest of AIG, Tom formed Clayton Consultants to provide risk assessment services and respond exclusively to incidents of kidnap for ransom and extortion for AIG policy holders. Tom eventually sold Clayton Consultants in 2006. Prior to entering the private sector, Tom spent over 20 years as a Foreign Service Officer for the U.S. Department of State. Most of Tom’s time at State was spent in and throughout Latin America.
Tom served honorably in the Civil Censorship Detachment of the U.S. Army in Japan following the Japanese surrender in 1944. Tom holds a Bachelors and Master’s Degree in education and foreign languages from San Jose State University. Tom earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Latin American history and economics from American University in Washington, D.C.
MICHAEL R. SEWARD, RADM (R)
Senior Advisor – Maritime Services
Rear Admiral Michael R. (Mike) Seward is a senior advisor at FocusPoint International. A port security expert, Mike is responsible for guiding the company’s maritime security services, to include all port security consulting and vessel security operations. Mike retired from his duties as Coast Guard Pacific Area Deputy Commander for Mobilization and Reserve Affairs in July of 2010. Rear Admiral Seward graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management and a commission as an Ensign.
His active duty assignments included a tour aboard CGC Rush (WHEC 723), a 378-foot high-endurance Cutter based in Alameda, CA. He also served as an Admissions Officer and Instructor at the Coast Guard Academy. Prior to his last assignment, Rear Admiral Seward served as Deputy J-3 at NORTHCOM, Colorado Springs, CO, Commodore, Naval Coastal Warfare Squadron Three Zero, Imperial Beach, CA, Deputy Chief of Staff, Eleventh Coast Guard District in Alameda, CA, Coast Guard Liaison Officer at Naval Coastal Warfare Group One in San Diego, CA, Deputy Operations Officer for Contingencies at Coast Guard Pacific Area in Alameda, CA, and Commanding Officer of Port Security Unit 311, based in San Pedro, CA.
Mike commanded several reserve units, and held temporary command of CGC Point Heyer (WPB 82369), an 82-foot patrol boat based in San Francisco, CA. During other reserve assignments he served aboard Cutters Point Barrow (WPB 82348), Boutwell (WHEC 719), Sherman (WHEC 720), and Midgett (WHEC 726). In 1991 Rear Admiral Seward was mobilized to Saudi Arabia for Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm as Executive Officer of Port Security Unit 303. He deployed to Somalia in December 1992 as a member of the joint Coast Guard-Navy Naval Coastal Warfare Assessment Team for Operation Restore Hope. In 2001, he was mobilized for Operation Noble Eagle, spending seven months conducting “Red Cell” anti-terrorism analysis for the Coast Guard Pacific Area. Rear Admiral Seward has been awarded the Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, (two awards), the Coast Guard Commendation Medal, (two awards), the Department of Transportation 9-11 Medal, the Coast Guard Achievement Medal (two awards), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. He also has earned the Port Security, Cutterman, and Boat Forces Breast Insignia.
BORJA MADRID
Senior Advisor – Corporate Strategy & Finance
Mr. Borja Madrid is a senior advisor at FocusPoint International, based in New York, NY. Mr. Madrid has worked closely with the executive team at FocusPoint since the inception of the company. In his capacity as a senior advisor, Borja provides on-going advice and counsel regarding the overall growth strategy and associated M&A activity of FocusPoint.
Borja is a founding Partner at Phoenician Resources, a multi-strategy oil & gas focused investment firm. Prior to founding Phoenician, Borja was a Director of ZBI Ventures (“ZBIV”), the energy-focused private equity arm of Ziff Brothers Investments. While at ZBIV, Borja leveraged the due diligence, risk assessment and close protection services of FocusPoint on several occasions. Borja saw first-hand the value of engaging a professional services firm in the security and risk management space early and often in the investment process.
Prior to joining ZBIV, Borja was an Engagement Manager at McKinsey & Company, the global consultancy, in the New York office, where he was a member of the Corporate Finance, the Global Energy and Materials and the Electric Power & Natural Gas Practices. Borja started his career in the Investment Banking Division of Salomon Smith Barney. He received a B.S. from CUNEF in Madrid and an M.B.A. from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
